POLICE are warning young people of the dangers of inhaling nitrous oxide.

The advice comes after dozens of used so-called 'laughing gas' cannisters were found discarded in Bishops Lydeard this week.

Officers are carrying out increased patrols in the village and nearby Cotford St Luke this weekend.

A spokesperson for Wellington Neighbourhood Policing team said: "Nitrous Oxide. NOS. Balloons. Laughing Gas. Whatever you want to call it, if you use it, have you considered the dangers?

"Effective in seconds, lasts for minutes but some of the side effects can be serious.

"FACT -Inhaling nitrous oxide can result in a lack of oxygen to the brain which could result in falling unconscious and possibly dying."

  • Other potential effects are: dizziness & loss of balance leading to falls;
  • hallucinations;
  • headaches;
  • lung and throat damage;
  • vitamin B12 deficiency in chronic users leading to memory issues and negative mood.

The spokesperson added: "Officers from the team will be carrying out increased patrols of Cotford St Luke and Bishops Lydeard this weekend to target youths using of balloons and nitrous oxide cannisters in these areas.

"The used cannisters in the pictures were found discarded in Bishops Lydeard earlier this week.

"Remember to stay safe if you are out this weekend, think twice and don't be tempted to make a choice which could potentially at best ruin your night, but at worst, ruin your life."
