John Marshall gives free homeless haircuts at Taunton Open Door

Taunton hairdresser John Marshall has been cutting and styling homeless people's hair for free every month for the last four years and he "finds it very rewarding".

John owns and runs the busy Medusa Hair Salons in Taunton but always finds time to head down to Taunton Open Door to cut the hair of the homeless.

He said: "I feel bad for their situation and using my skills as a hairdresser is the best way I can give back to them.

"I never miss a session there as I wouldn't want to let them down but it is also very rewarding for me, I get so much out of it.

"I like to make them look and feel good and I try and speak with them about anything and everything, I think they enjoy getting a freshen up and someone to chat to as well."

Taunton Open Door said: "Our resident hairdresser John Marshall is great, the queues for his haircuts are huge.

"He attends in his own time giving cuts to our clients for free. The smiles on our clients faces shows how much they appreciate a tidy up."

But John added: "It is great to see how appreciative the clients are of a freshen up, however it is just as rewarding for me, I really enjoy doing it."

Mr Marshall said other hairdressers or beauty technicians could get involved too.

"There is a lot of demand for my service down at Open Door so I am sure on weeks I am not there another hairdresser could do a drop in session.

"Also a woman this week mentioned she would enjoy having her nails done so if any beauty technicians in the area are interested, get in touch with Open Door."

Taunton Open Door is a drop in service and day centre for the local homeless community.

It is situated in Mount Street, Taunton and is always looking for more help being volunteers or donations.
