STUDENTS at Taunton School are settling in to a new Sixth Form Centre that opened this term as part of a £750,000 autumn investment in facilities.

The centre, known as ‘The Guvvy’, is based in the school’s 19th Century building and features study pods, social areas and unisex toilets.

Head student Charlie Franks, 18, said: “I feel that the space is appreciated by students as we had a hand in creating the design of the space, making the time spent in there fulfilling and enjoyable as it reflects what we wanted in it.

“The new space is amazing. It provides a relaxed area where friends can come and socialise with one another, alongside a collaborative working space in which sixth form students can complete

work.”

Terry Harris, head of estates at Taunton School, said: “We’re delighted that the students are settling in well to their new environment.

“The new centre adds a contemporary feel to our beautiful 19th century building, retaining period features such as stained glass windows while offering a bright, airy and modern designated space for our Sixth Formers.”

The Guvvy is named after a member of Taunton School staff known as ‘The Governor’, who ran the tuck shop in the 1880s.

Taunton School’s new library is due to open in October and work is currently in progress to create a ‘green heart’ in the centre of the school, scheduled for completion in December.

The school also plans to transform sports facilities over the next two years and open a brand new international school in 2026.
