WE have all heard the expression ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. For me, it is also my favourite meal of the day.

I have had my fair share of cooked breakfasts and would say I know what makes a good one. Here is what I made of the Corner Club in Taunton.

It is a family run Brunch & Dessert Parlour on Bath Place in the town centre and is a child restaurant to the same family who run The Skewer House and Nobregas Tapas & Paella.

The menu is Portuguese inspired with its desserts and offers brunch in three forms, on top of sourdough toast, on a bagel or in stacks.

The restaurant itself is modern and bright with scenic walls filled with flowers and greenery and on a nice day you can sit outside, which I did when I visited. It had a European feel to it.

Somerset County Gazette:

My order

I ordered the ‘Piggy Avo’ for a main, I also ordered a latte and a glass of squeezed orange juice.

The ‘Piggy Avo’ consists of a piece of sourdough toast topped with avocado, bacon, and a poached egg.

The avocado was fresh, the bacon was crispy, and the egg was poached well, and the yolk oozed over my plate when cut open.

Somerset County Gazette:

I enjoyed it. It was a good amount of food to have for my brunch and I would go back and have it again.

It costs me £8. Which I thought was reasonably priced. Whilst it probably is slightly more expensive than a full English elsewhere in Taunton, for a meal that is more aesthetically pleasing and unique, it was fair.

I should mention as well, the ‘Super Stack’ is available for those who are very hungry. For £12, you get crispy bacon, potato fritter rosti, eggs, grilled tomato, crumbled feta & pesto, all on top of toasted sourdough. I wasn’t brave enough to try it, but it did look impressive on the table next to me.

And for dessert

Now, you know I had to try a dessert. And I went traditional, ordering two Natas – the classic Portuguese dessert.

They are egg custard tart pastries, classically dusted with cinnamon but can also have a wide range of toppings.

I ordered one classic one and one with raspberry & clotted cream. The classic cinnamon option is £2 for one, and the loaded ones are £2.50 each.

Somerset County Gazette:

I was pleasantly surprised. They were delicious. The flaky crust of the pastry mixed with the sweetness in the custard was really good. Give one a try if you venture to the Corner Club.

They also offer churros, a wide variety of cakes and donuts and also a list of pancakes and waffle options. That includes a crispy fried chicken waffle and a Kinder Bueno pancake stack.

Would I recommend it?

Yes. Definitely. It was fresh, clean and had a very nice atmosphere. And the food was great. What more could you want?

If you are after a full English breakfast then perhaps this place isn’t for you but if you are willing to try something new then the Corner Club is a great option.
