A ROAD in a village near Taunton remains closed this morning (Saturday, November 12) following an oil spill.

The B3224 at Lethbridge Park, Bishops Lydeard, has been closed since around 5.30pm on Thursday (November 10) due to a "significant oil spillage".

Highways officers will assess the situation this morning to decided whether the road can be safely reopened to traffic.

Yesterday evening a spokesperson for Travel Somerset said: "The B3224 Raleghs Cross Road, Bishops Lydeard, Somerset.

"Large oil spillage is still causing problems and the road is very slippery.

"Road remains closed on safety grounds between Lethbridge Park, Bishops Lydeard and Honeyball Cross, Ash Priors.

"Situation to be reviewed Saturday."

Workers spread absorbent fibre in an attempt to clear up the spillage on Thursday evening.

But plans to potentially re-open the road yesterday were put on hold after an inspection revealed the road closure barriers had been removed and motorists had driven over the affected area..

That caused the oil to spread over a length of 500 metres, causing the road to remain closed and hampering the clean up operation and resulting in delays for traffic.
