A TAUNTON woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer is setting up a support group in the town.

Heather Lamont said she was unable to share her feelings with other people with the same disease as there were no breast cancer support groups in Taunton.

She has undergone months of treatment since she was told she had bilateral breast cancer in February.

"I could have really done with some help from a support group, but there are none locally," said Heather.

"It would have helped me if there was someone going through the same experience as me to talk to privately and confidentially.

"For that reason, I'm setting up a group myself with the help of a cancer support worker."

Heather is holding a free two-hour coffee morning to launch the group at Comeytrowe Community Centre, in Pitts Close, Taunton, at 10am on Tuesday, January 17.

She is funding the session herself with refreshments donated by Tesco, while there is free parking.

"I feel really passionate there should be a support group," said Heather.

"It's for women and men. Although breast cancer is more common in women, men can get it as well.

"A lot of people with breast cancer may feel isolated.

"There will be a friendly face to welcome people to the group."

Heather has completed her main treatment, although she will be on medication for the next 10 years.

She was diagnosed after seeing her GP when she became concerned about a little lump in one of her breasts in January.

"My GP referred me to the clinic and I was seen within two weeks," said Heather, who is currently having physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to give her back as much mobility as possible.

"I was a fit 50-year-old with no history of breast cancer in my family, I wasn't overweight and I had a healthy diet.

"I want to increase awareness that it can happen to anyone.

"My message to everyone is, 'Check, check check'. If you find any lumps get down to the doctor's.

"My experience has opened my eyes. It's affected me in different ways.

"A support group will help the many people who feel isolated and haven't got the support of friends, family or loved ones.

"People will be able to find a listening ear and make friendships."
