FIREFIGHTERS and police were sent to reports of a potential fire in the disused former Debenhams store in the centre of Taunton.

A 999 caller reported smoke issuing from the premises in North Street yesterday morning (Christmas Eve).

A spokesperson for Taunton Neighbourhood Policing team said: "We assisted the fire service following a report of smoke coming from the old Debenhams building on North Street.

"Thankfully all was in order."

The Debenhams store in the county town closed on Sunday, May 2 last year, with the rest of the shops nationwide closed by May 15.

It came after the company collapsed in 2020 after 242 years.

The online business was bought by Boohoo in a £55million deal.
