THE cause of a devastating fire off Taunton town centre yesterday (Thursday, February 2) was "accidental", an investigation has concluded.

The blaze in Bridge Street broke out at around 5.30am and 10 fire engines and two aerial platforms were sent to the scene.

Police cordoned off an area of Bridge Street and Wood Street and a road block was in place for a number of hours as fire crews battled the fire, which started in the ground floor of the Bare Grills restaurant.

The building was badly damaged and there was also damage to a neighbouring business premises.

Residents in the flats above the Bare Grills premises were safely evacuated at the height of the blaze and there were no reported injuries.

The fire spread to an adjoining dental centre and three buildings were taped off after the fire had been extinguished.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just to confirm that following fire investigation, the cause was determined to be accidental and there were no casualties.

"Residents in the flats above were safely evacuated and the surrounding area cordoned off to allow for safe firefighting and access for emergency services."
