BOSSES at Aldi are gearing up plans for a second supermarket in Taunton.

The discount retailer recently gained planning permission for a store on Chip Lane.

It has now applied to Somerset West and Taunton Council to be allowed to put up five advertising signs on the building elevations and the site boundary.

In a submission to the council, the company's representative says: "The proposed signage for the building and the site is required to clarify the nature of the commercial use and to advertise the retailer's presence in the area...this is crucial to the commercial success of the business."

It adds that the signs are "not excessive and will not result in unnecessary clutter" and "will not impact adversely on public safety".

Aldi plans to demolish the existing commercial premises on the site ahead of construction work on the new store.

It already has a supermarket in Bathpool, on the eastern edge of the county town.
