A SECTION of a road near Glastonbury will be closed throughout next week.

Wessex Water is closing the B3151 St Mary's Road in Meare during flood prevention work there from Monday (February 13) until Friday (February 17).

A diversion route will take traffic along the B3151 to Wedmore, B3139 to Wells, A39 to Glastonbury, then back to Meare.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “These are the final stages of £200,000 of repairs we’ve been completing in Westhay and Meare to line sewers so that the infiltration of groundwater into the system, which can lead to flooding in homes, can be prevented.

“This work has been continuing on a number of roads in both Westhay and Meare since the middle of January, mainly under traffic lights or minor road closures and using ‘no-dig’ techniques, which are quicker and less intrusive than replacing the pipe in a conventional manner as much as possible.

“However, we do need to close a section of the B3151 (St Mary’s Road) in Meare to through traffic for a week from Monday 13 February.

"A signposted diversion will be in place, directing traffic along the B3151 to Wedmore, B3139 to Wells, A39 to Glastonbury then back to Meare.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this essential work.

"We expect the scheme to be finished on Friday 17 February and have written to residents and businesses in the area to advise them.’’
