THERE are "many potential occupiers" queuing up to move into the multi-million pound Coal Orchard development off Taunton town centre, the council said this week.

A number of businesses have already put in bids to take space in one of the many units.

Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) is studying those offers to make sure they are "a good fit" for the site beside the River Tone.

According to the council, the businesses in talks include owners of café, bar and restaurant; gym; shops and estate/letting agencies.

SWT is not naming names of the companies while negotiations are in progress for commercial reasons.

Cllr Mike Rigby, SWT executive member for economic development, planning and transportation, said: "We are discussing with many potential occupiers for the Coal Orchard commercial space.

"We have had some offers and are working through the appropriate due diligence to ensure that the offer is a good fit for the development, the area, but also the business in question to ensure any agreement is sustainable.

"There are a number of different businesses in discussions: food and beverage, restaurants, café, fitness, retail and estate/letting agencies.

"We cannot share any names during negotiations, but as soon as we are able to share this information we will."

Since the Coal Orchard scheme was officially opened in November, all but one of the commercial spaces has remained vacant.

Occupants are already living in some of the flats at the locations.
