TAUNTON-local Luke Bishop won the prestigious British Amateur Squash Championship played in London over the weekend.

The tournament which originated in 1922 and runs annually features 64 of the top amateur players and is played over a four day period.

Luke, who is the Somerset number one and plays locally at the Wyvern Club progressed through the first two days and four matches to reach the semi-final.

Here he came up against an old adversary, Kent's Jamie Wilde who he had lost to in what was a very close two hour match in last year's final.

This was again a very high quality encounter played in an excellent spirit and with many epic rallies, Luke won the first set and Jamie the second before Luke took command winning the next two sets to triumph three sets to one.

The final played in front of a very large crowd on Monday evening saw Luke up against Jared Carter from Derbyshire.

The first set featured more very long attritional and gruelling rallies and eventually saw Carter go one up.

Luke started to dominate and move his opponent all over the court and took the next three sets to win the match and the title.
