GAIA Earth will be coming to Taunton Minster this week.

The exhibition will run from Friday, April 14 until May 1, 2023. Residents will be able to see the artwork from 10am until 2pm.

There will also be evening viewings Thursday to Saturday from 7pm until 9.30pm.

The Museum of the Moon exhibition in March 2022 saw huge success, and Luke Jerram's sister sculpture, Gaia, is expected to receive just as much attention.

Locals will be able to see the three-dimensional sculpture and will hopefully take away an important message. Speaking when the exhibition was announced, Luke said: "I hope visitors to Gaia get to see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place.

“An ecosystem we urgently need to look after – our only home. Halfway through the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, we urgently need to wake up, and change our behaviour.

“We need to quickly make the changes necessary to prevent run away Climate Change.

“I was amazed and delighted that my Museum of the Moon artwork has been so popular. I’m fully aware that 10 million members of the public haven’t been coming to see an artwork by ‘Luke Jerram’, but rather ‘The Moon’: an object of universal appeal and cultural significance.

“With this Gaia Earth artwork, I’m interested in just how different the experience and interpretation will be. For our entire human existence, we have been gazing up at the moon and projecting all our hopes, dreams and wishes up there.

“Whereas it was only in 1968 that we were able to see our planet floating as a blue marble in space.”

As stated on the Taunton Minster website, the Gaia structure features a 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, giving people a unique view usually reserved for astronauts. It is hoped that, like them, attendees feel a sense of awe at the beauty of our planet and wish to do all they can to protect it.

On Saturdays (April 15, 22 and 29) there will be a series of Eco Talks from various eco and climate organisations. These will start at 5pm. The talks will end by 6.15pm, with time afterwards for questions and any follow-up conversations.
