AROUND 350 cyclists pedalled the 55 miles from Watchet Harbour to West Bay on Sunday (April 23).

The annual Coast to Coast challenge, organised by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, raised vital funds to help critically ill or injured patients.

The scenic route followed a mixture of quiet back roads, demanding climbs and hairy descents - taking various pit stops along the way to grab refreshments.

At West Bay, friends and family members turned out in force to show their support.

One rider, local man Dave Richards, from Chard, was particularly pleased to complete the ride from Watchet.

He said: "If it was not for the skills and prompt action by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance I wouldn't be here.

"They saved my life. One sunny July morning in 2021 I was cycling with my two friends Tony and Peter when we were mown over by a speeding drunk driver on his phone.

"So I'm doing the Coast to Coast challenge to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause.”

Dave suffered horrific injuries, losing an eye, shattering all his ribs and, if it were not for surgeon's skills, he would have lost his left arm too. He has had many operations to enable him to get back in the saddle again.

“I am so pleased to be able to do this,” he added.

“The accident changed my life but, thanks to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance I got to hospital.

"Since then, I've gradually pushed myself down the rehabilitation route and with time and the support of many professionals, friends and a loving family I'm able to take on physical challenges like this once more.”
