POLICE have confirmed a man has died following a collision on the M5.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following the incident on the motorway near Bridgwater yesterday (Wednesday, April 26).

The fatal collision took place on the southbound carriageway between junctions 23 (Bridgwater) and 24 (North Petherton) at around 10pm.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "A man was struck by a lorry and, despite the efforts of paramedics and officers, sadly died at the scene.

"His next of kin has been informed and will be supported by specially a trained family liaison officer.

"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

The carriageway was closed until around 2.45am while emergency services responded to the incident.

A diversion via the A38 was in place during the closure.
