MORE than 60 people walked, talked and enjoyed a day of cricket on Sunday (June 25) to raise funds for St Margaret’s Hospice Care.

Fuelled by bacon sarnies, the walkers completed five miles in hot conditions, through the stunning countryside near the Bishop’s Hull hospice, finishing up at The Cooper Associates County Ground for day one of the County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.

Supporters from across Somerset took part in the inaugural Big Somerset Cricket Bash, many with their own heartfelt stories and memories to share of loved ones.

One participant had left Glastonbury Festival to join in before heading back for the final day of music afterwards.

On arrival at the County Ground, the supporters were welcomed by St Margaret’s new mascot.

The group also remembered Taunton student and cricketer Barnaby Webber, whose mum, Emma, is a trustee of St Margaret’s.

Ellie Weston, marketing and events officer at the charity, said: “We’re so proud of this new event, and incredibly grateful to our amazing supporters.

"It was a brilliant spectacle to see them all wearing their Big Somerset Cricket Bash T-shirts with their dedications on, talking, smiling, and enjoying the beautiful weather.

"We’ve had some wonderful feedback, and it’s an event we hope will grow year on year and become an annual fixture on the St Margaret’s calendar.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to our event sponsor Rotec Hydraulics, Somerset County Cricket Club for hosting us, and to our wonderful volunteers who generously gave up their time to support us.”
