YEOVIL Town have confirmed the signing of Taunton Town stalwart, Jake Wannell.

The centre half who joined the Peacocks from Salisbury in the summer of 2020 has joined Yeovil Town FC for an undisclosed fee.

The signing sparked upset amongst fans, with some asking the question - how could he leave for our nearest rivals?

Taunton Town's head of football Rob Dray said: "He’s received a fantastic offer to transition to full time football and with his job he feels it is an opportunity that happens once in a non-league footballer’s career if you are very lucky! He goes with our blessing."

Dray added that his service to the club has been very good and consistent.

“Jake has been a huge part of this squad since he came to us, instrumental in winning the league, and key in finishing mid table in our first season in the national league.

He will be a big miss on the pitch and in the changing room, but when you build good teams of good players this attracts other clubs, so in essence it shows we as a club are doing something correct."

As Jake prepares for his move to Huish Park he told fans and staff at Taunton Town he will miss the club.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Rob and all the management team for bringing me to this unbelievable football club 3 years ago.

"I can’t express how much I have enjoyed my football here. I can honestly say I’ve got some friends for life here, without doubt the best dressing room I have ever come across."

He added that the fans have been incredible.

"I would also like to thank the fans for their incredible support over the years. We have created memories for life, winning the league together. It really doesn’t go unnoticed for those that travelled to Dover on a Tuesday night. Incredible."

But ultimately his decision came down to the opportunity to play full time football.

"Football is such a short career & an opportunity has arisen which I can’t look past. No doubt our paths will cross again at some point. I look forward to seeing you all again soon."

Jake came up through the youth ranks at Exeter City from 2008 to 2012 so has a taste of professional football already.
