CRICKETING legend Sir Garfield Sobers was at Taunton School to pass on tips to young players in June 2015.

The former West Indies all-rounder chatted to children, signed autographs and took part in a Q&A session attended by senior students, staff, parents and members of the public.

Sobers, then 78, was the first batsman to hit six sixes in an over in a first-class match.

He scored over 8,000 runs in Test matches at an average of 57.78 and took over 200 wickets as a fast or slow bowler.

Earlier in the day the then Somerset captain and former England batsman Marcus Trescothick, who was head of cricket development at the school, ran a series of coaching sessions for pupils from

Taunton Prep School and Parkfield, North Town and Cotford St Luke Primary Schools.

North Town students Daisy Farrow and Yvie Laker both had a particularly memorable afternoon as they dismissed Trescothick during a net session.

Afterwards he signed their shirts, writing: “You got me out!”

Sobers also visited King’s College, Taunton, morning ahead of a PCA Masters T20 match between the school and a team of former Test match stars.

He was also given a tour of Somerset County Cricket Club’s County Ground, where he watched youngsters being coached.

He was shown a new stand under construction.
