TAUNTON's newest pizza takeaway restaurant opened its doors today (Tuesday, July 4) and already it seems to be taking the town by storm.

The takeaway is a part of the Fireaway chain of restaurants across the UK and the Taunton store takes the total to over 120 stores in the country.

At midday the restaurant opened its doors on Bridge Street, and along with around 20 other people, we were there to get our hands on the pizza.

Which we did. And here's what we thought.

The restaurant

Outside looking in the takeaway looks clean, modern and it smells like fresh pizza. As you would expect.

Once you step through the doors, you come to a somewhat spacious waiting/ordering area (which was filled to the brim on opening day).

Behind the counter is the pizza making area, on full display too, so you can watch the staff preparing your pizza right in front of you. No hiding here.

Behind that further, is the pizza oven. It looks like a little hole in the wall, but inside is a rotating disc that appears to cook around six pizzas at a time.

All the staff we dealt with on our visit were friendly, and seemed to know exactly what was going on, suggesting they've had their training before opening day.

The pizza

On to more important matters - the pizza. We ordered a King Pepperoni Pizza and a Fireaway Special Pizza for savoury selections.

I think it best to order something with the restaurant's name in it on a first visit. The Fireaway Special was pretty good too, glad we ordered it.

It comes with a tomato base, mozzarella, meatballs, mixed peppers and parmesan.

The tang of the peppers goes well with the meatballs and the cheese pull was very impressive. I would recommend it.

Moving on to the classic pepperoni. In my opinion this was the best pizza I have had in Taunton and the closest thing to an authentic Italian pizza you could get in the area.

The pepperoni was bursting with flavour, and that oil from the meat and worked its way through the cheese and the dough, ahh! Just amazing.

A must try.

We paid £5 for each pizza as it was an opening day special. However, normal price is £11.95 for the 12 inch pizzas.

We also ordered a Nutella Pizza with strawberries on top for some dessert.

Don't knock it till you try it. It is delicious.

It is £4.95 for the base Nutella Pizza, with toppings adding the price will increase.

A freshly prepared pizza dough is cooked in the oven then topped with cut up strawberries and a big portion of Nutella.

It was sweet and juicy with the strawberries complimenting the Nutella well. I would get it again.

Background

The new Taunton store is just the latest addition to Fireaway Pizza's growing network in the UK.

It all started when Mario Aleppo opened the first restaurant five years ago in London.

He said: "When my Nonna came over from the Amalfi Coast of Italy in the 1950s she brought a pizza recipe that FIREAWAY PIZZA has been spreading through the streets of London since 2016.

"We have tweaked our menu to include Oreo milkshakes, Nutella pizzas and Vegan options so we have something for everyone."

So there you go, fancy trying that famous Nonna's recipe? I would recommend you give it a try.
