WELLS Art Contemporary (WAC) exhibition is back from August 5 to September 2, featuring world class art in Wells Cathedral.

It attracts artists’ entries from across the globe and is a highlight in the region’s cultural calendar, encouraging visitors to the city and boosting the local economy.

WAC chairman Paddy O’Hagan said: “The very nature of contemporary art is to present a visual representation of modern-day society and so we hope to provide visitors with an inspiring and thought-provoking experience.”

There are distinct elements of the exhibition.

The Gallery Show attracts almost 3,000 entries from 55 countries, with 137 artworks selected in a wide range of mediums, from painting and textiles to printmaking and photography, all displayed in a gallery space along three sides of the cathedral’s cloisters.

The Installation Show comprises 29 pieces that draw inspiration from the architecture and spirituality in a trail through the cathedral and its garden. There were more than 200 proposals of site-specific artwork.

“Whilst not asking for religious art, the brief was for ideas which convey a sense of spiritual intensity in response to this unique medieval building,” said WAC exhibition director Bill Lloyd. “We were overwhelmed by the quality of the entries."

WAC has also worked alongside community groups, providing a platform to showcase unique pieces of artwork. This year will see interactive installations from local charities Heads Up, The Lawrence Centre and Creativity Works, as well as a piece from national charity Outside In, which provides a platform for artists who encounter significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance, or isolation. The work to be included is a free-standing, cardboard figural sculpture, The Sprinter, by James Lake from Exeter, who lost his right leg to bone cancer at 17.

Paddy O'Hagan added: "Each year we look for ways to expand and enhance the exhibition.

"One new event is DRAW! Between 3pm and 5pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays during WAC, there are drawing sessions for the public on the Cathedral Green."

Budding artists of all abilities can join a group and draw the cathedral's West Front, with professional artists on hand to help and advise.

Finished pieces can be entered into a competition to be judged by the professional artists. Book a place at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/draw-tickets-648036172637.

Entry to the exhibition is included with admission to the cathedral. A virtual exhibition will be available to view at www.wellsartcontemporary.co.uk
