IT drizzled all afternoon but the band played on, stallholders did brisk business, beer, tea and cakes quickly disappeared as Fitzhead Fete on Saturday (July 22) proved a resounding success in spite of the weather – with £5,200 in takings.
“There was a fabulous turn out supporting us,” said Abi Wickham, who organises the event helped by villagers.
“My thanks to everyone who takes the time and effort to ensure it is such a successful event, even in the rain.”
The popular community fete, which traces its history back to before the First World War, had a host of attractions from village stocks to a beer tent, Wiveliscombe Town Band to cream teas and a barbeque, children’s races to stalls selling everything from books to clothes, bric a brac to ice-creams, cakes and jams.
Th Rev Andrew Norris maintained high energy commentary on the PA system, and there was a strong display of produce, craft and creative work at the flower show.
Connie Burton won the Bellamy Cup for ages 11 to 14 and the Best in Show for children, while Cilla Owens took Best in Show.
Funds were boosted on Sunday by a 300-plastic duck race on the river bank at Holcombe Farm, where hosts Martin and Mandy Irish laid on cream teas and walks in the garden.
Funds raised go to the village church, St James and the Tithe Barn.
