THE wait is over for Taunton Town fans as the new season in the National League South is set to kick off on Saturday.

The Peacocks will welcome Braintree Town to Wordsworth Drive for a 3pm kick off.

A tough game could be in store for Taunton, if the visitors' seventh-placed finish last season is anything to go by.

Braintree's pre-season form consists of wins at Clacton Town (1-0), Ipswich Wanderers (4-1), Holland (6-1), Sudbury (1-0) and Canvey Island (4-0).

And a 1-0 defeat at Needham Market last Saturday and a draw 0-0 at Hornchurch last Tuesday.

For Taunton, the results have been mixed but the performances have been what is exciting.

A new brand of football has been on show as the Peacocks have managed to keep possession much better than seen last season.

Whilst the squad still is able to go back to their tried and tested style of play, Rob Dray said it is the plan to be adaptable and different.

"I thought it worked well, we looked good with four. It is something we are working on and it will require a strong link between the back four and the goalkeeper," he said.

Injury wise, Taunton will be without Phil Mendonca as he received news that reconstructive surgery is necessary on his knee, ruling him out for up to a year.

Outside of that, the squad is expected to be full strength for the match on Saturday.
