ANOTHER country pub has closed suddenly.

The Orchard Inn, in Hillcommon, has not reopened since last orders were called on Sunday afternoon.

The reason for the closure is unknown, although it comes at a time of a number of local pubs shutting in the area.

There have been no announcements on the pub's social media or website and the phone rings out when people call.

One person we spoke to said: "The Orchard Inn at Hillcommon has shut down.

"There's nothing on their website or social media yet, but supposedly it was due to be sold and the buyer pulled out at the last minute."

Previously known as the Royal Oak, the pub was hugely popular for a period in the 1970s onwards.

Only last week, Bridgwater and West Somerset MP Ian Liddell-Grainger warned that a number of country pubs were at risk of closure.

He said rural communities should come up with ways of maximising the use of failing pubs while ministers needed to consider what special help could be offered.

He was speaking after Dulverton's Bridge Inn called time after hundreds of years, along with The Swan in Bampton, both citing unaffordable increased running costs.
