A HOUSEBUILDER has donated £1,500 to Taunton Foodbank to help the charity during the cost of living crisis.

Barratt David Wilson Homes South West has made a donation to Taunton Foodbank to help the organisation and the community it serves during the cost of living crisis.

The charity’s warehouse, based at Belvedere Trading Estate, received the donation from Barratt David Wilson Homes South West.

Taunton Foodbank works with a team of more than 100 volunteers who work tirelessly to help people in need, providing food from its distribution centres in Taunton, Wellington, and Wiveliscombe.

It has received more than 82 tonnes of food this year, donated by individuals at supermarket collection points, churches, schools, community groups, and charities and by those who turn up at the foodbank.

The charity’s van drivers have also collected more than 56 tonnes of food from major supermarkets and smaller convenience stores.

The £1,500 donation from the housebuilder which comes at a critical time as it grapples with the challenges of a tough economic climate and a notable decrease in its warehouse stock.

Taunton Foodbank’s manager, Sue Weightman, said this is the most demanding period they have encountered in their 11 years of operation, even surpassing the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The economic instability has put immense strain on our resources, making this contribution even more valuable and timely.

She comments: “Taunton Foodbank plays an important role in addressing food insecurity in the area.

“We don’t receive any government funding and we’re reliant on charitable donations.

“With our warehouse reserves currently down by over 50 per cent, the situation has become increasingly challenging.”

For those who rely on the food bank's services, a consistent supply of food boxes provides much-needed stability during uncertain times.

Sue added: “As the summer break approaches, we expect more people will use our services so the support from Barratt David Wilson Homes will allow us to continue to fulfil our mission to provide food to those in need.”

Louise Ware, sales director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, added: “Taunton Foodbank works hard to alleviate some of the burdens faced by vulnerable families.

“Community is at the heart of what we do and we’re pleased to be in a position to provide funding to help families in and around Taunton who are currently finding things tough.

“During times of economic challenges and increased demand for essential services, I hope our donation highlights the positive impact businesses can have on local communities and serve as an example for others to follow.”

Barratt David Wilson Homes South West is currently building much-needed new homes in Somerset including Nerrols Grange in Taunton, Moorland Gate in Bishop’s Lydeard, and Delamare Park in Frome.
