NEARLY 700 gathered at Morganians Rugby Club this Sunday September 3, to push themselves to the limit for Bridgwater Half Marathon.

Scorching temperatures and makeshift toilets were among the challenges competitors had to face on top of running a gruelling 13.1 miles, but the day was overall a huge success.

Gavin Roberts, race director for Bridgwater Half Marathon, said: "We had nearly 700 runners across the half marathon, 10K and 5K races turn out for what was a scorcher in terms of temperature, the runners handled the heat really well but it was naturally really difficult on them and they should be applauded from the rooftops for the efforts.

"The day ran very smoothly from an organisational point of view with additional water available for spectators and participants to combat the heat.

"An issue with the toilet provision at the race HQ meant that the quick thinking organisers had to fabricate some less than ideal eco festival style composting loos to accommodate the numbers on site and this was certainly a talking point, but most people understood the reasons for the hasty creation and embraced their inner eco warrior!

"A really successful day was had by all, and whilst all of the sums have not yet been done, organisers expect the day to raise over £10,000 in aid of Cancer Research UK."
