THE National Police Air Service have issued an image of police on the ground near Taunton assisting a "person in crisis".

The image shows a man on the outside of a bridge over the M5 near the A361 with a number of officers in attendance.

A number of lorries can be seen under the bridge, with the drivers having offered to "safeguard the person".

Due to the intervention of the police, the man "is now safe".

The incident came shorly after officers were called to a house in Norton Fitzwarren at around 4.40pm yesterday (Sunday, Sepember 10) to a report of a man making threats to the occupant and causing damage to the property.

The man left the address in a large military truck when officers arrived before driving the vehicle into two police cars blocking the road, causing them extensive damage.

No police officers or members of the public were hurt in the incident.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "The man subsequently drove to the A361 M5 overbridge where he exited the vehicle and climbed over the railings, leading the motorway to be closed in both directions.

"The man was arrested 25 minutes later and he currently remains in police custody."

An NPAS South West and Wales region took to X - formerly Twitter - to say: "We have deployed our Exeter aircraft to assist @ASPolice with a person in crisis on the #M5 at #Taunton."

They added: "Excellent intervention by officers on scene means male is now safe.

"Fantastic to see #HGV drivers offering to help with their lorries to safeguard the person - thank you 👍."
