BACK in September 2007, around 350 Scouts welcomed VIPs to Huish Woods, near Taunton, to mark the opening of their district camp.

Taunton Deane’s Mayor and Mayoress Ken and Mary Hayward and MP Jeremy Browne joined the young people to raise a new flag, which would be flown to represent the district at a gathering in London in November.

Scout Development Commissioner Peter Bourner told the County Gazette: “We had extremely good weather and it was a very successful camp.”

The Scouts planted 100 trees to mark the organisation’s centenary, donated by Bartletts Tree Surgeons, while other activities included tree climbing, branding wood, and face painting.

There was the opportunity to view an archive exhibition featuring books and memorabilia and campfire.

There was also a Scout’s Own thought for the day and the theme for the campsite was the 1960s.

Mr Browne said: “2007 is the centenary year for the Scouting movement.

"This has been a year of celebration with events taking place around the world.

“Huish Woods was opened by the then MP for Taunton back in 1961.

"In the 46 years since it has been a wonderful location for camping.

"It is a magical place with endless possibilities for exciting activities.

“It was great to see the hundreds of children and volunteers enjoying the special atmosphere at Huish Woods.”
