TELEVISION presenter Nick Knowles and an engineer from Taunton sprang into action to rescue a woman and her baby from an overturned car near Norton Fitzwarren back in September 2009.

Hero Nick was travelling along the B3227 near Rectory Road on his way to film the BBC series ‘Real Rescues’ when he spotted a black Ford Mondeo overturned in a nearby field.

The presenter, along with aerial engineer Simon Durden, ran to the scene to find driver Claire Williams and her 10-week-old baby Alexandra trapped in the car.

Nick pulled Claire to safety while Simon retrieved a screaming Alexandra and the pair waited until an ambulance arrived to take them to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

Shaken Claire told the County Gazette 14 years ago: “I was going into town when the car suddenly must have hit a kerb.

"It rolled three or four times.

“We ended upside down and I looked up to see Nick Knowles there with another man trying to get us out – I’d like to thank them both for their help.”

Claire suffered minor injuries while Alexandra was unscathed – both were discharged later in the day.

Knowles said: “When I heard the baby crying my blood ran cold – you wonder what you're going to see. That was fairly terrifying.

“I just did what everyone else would do. I’d hope anyone else would have done the same to help my loved ones.”

Fellow hero and Taunton Aerials employee Simon, from Bagborough Road, said: “I saw the car overturned. I heard the baby screaming, which is never nice, and ran over to the car.

“It was all such a blur. I wouldn’t call myself a hero as anyone else would have done the same.”

A few days later Nick phoned Claire's home to check she was alright.

After the call, Claire said: "Nick phoned the house on Sunday to check that we were both OK.

“He spoke to my husband and apologised for all the media interest, and said he couldn’t control it – we had a lot of people on the phone wanting to get hold of us.

“My husband offered to take him and Simon out for a drink.

“He’s back up north at the moment, but said he will give us a call when he’s next down.

“I’m feeling better. I’m still getting headaches and I’ve got a sore neck from the whiplash, so I’m going to the doctor, but everything’s fine.”
