WORK to remove barriers on the final Taunton town centre car park has been completed this week.

Barriers were removed at the Orchard Centre multi-storey car park, which now operates with a pay and display system.

A Somerset Council spokesperson said: “The barrier system has been unreliable in operation and expensive to maintain.

“The cost of maintenance and replacement parts has increased significantly and problems with the system still continued with barriers being damaged or malfunctioning.

“Removal of the barriers has now allowed the car parks to have pay and display machines, which offers motorists more choice of how they pay, either by card or Pay by Phone.

“The final car park to have barriers removed is the Orchard Centre multi-storey – work to install the new machines and remove the barriers has been carried out this week.

“The cost of the changes is covered by existing budgets.”

Barriers were also removed from six other car parks.

In August, Somerset Council confirmed all the barriers would be removed by the end of September.
