SIX fire engines are tackling a barn fire near Wellington this afternoon (October 2).

In Stawley, an agricultural barn containing hay and machinery is 'well alight', and there is also 1500 litres of liquid nitrogen next to the blaze.

Three fire engines were sent to the incident around 10am this morning, but further assitance was requested and now there are six fire engines in attendance.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival crews confirmed one shed well measuring 20m x 20m containing approximately 200 tonnes of hay well alight.

"Crews are using the following equipment to extinguish the fire:

  • Two breathing apparatus
  • One hose reel jet
  • One compressed air foam system jet
  • Thermal imaging camera

"Crews are currently trying to cool the nitrogen tank. The incident is still ongoing."
