POLICE caught 48 drivers speeding on a notorious main road that has seen many collisions over the years.

Officers clocked the motorists going over the limit in just one hour on the A38 at Thurloxton, between Taunton and Bridgwater.

A 50mph limit was introduced on the road after locals raised concerns over road traffic collisions, including serious injuries and fatalities.

Among drivers captured on police mobile cameras, one car was doing 81mph, while a van and a coach were also seen to be going at over 60mph.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police's roads policing unit said: "Hierarchical system being ignored. Cyclists mixed with tractors and those speeding at our busiest time.

"This is A38 Thurloxton in Somerset. It's a 50mph speed limit due to history of collisions. 48 drivers detected in one hour."
