WORK has begun to replace a former high-street clothing retailer with a new branch of a budget variety store in Somerset.
It is now clear that Poundland will take over the disused M&Co premises on Wells High Street, despite the retailer choosing not to respond to media enquiries.
Locals to the area noticed conversion work taking place today, Tuesday October 17, as tradesmen worked to install new Poundland branding to the shop's windows.
Although an official statement from the hardware store has not yet been released, further confirmation of the new Wells branch can be found on the Poundland careers website.
As of today, Poundland are recruiting, as vacancies for a Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager in Wells are now open for applications.
On the whole, Wells residents were pleased to learn the disused premises will be taken over by a new retailer.
One local stated: "I've probably got an unpopular opinion here but I'm quite glad we're getting a Poundland.
"It'll create more jobs for locals and it's one less empty shop.
"Not everyone in Wells can afford to shop in the more expensive shops here - this might make all the difference for someone on a low budget."
Another added: "Poundland is great!!!
"The clothes are good too - absolutely delighted for this to be coming."
Some locals were less enthusiastic however, as a disgruntled resident said: "Do we really need ANOTHER £1 shop?"
A fourth Wells High Street shopper stated: "Oh my days, vape shop next."
