A CHEF who has been cooking up breakfasts in a Taunton hotel for almost 50 years has won a top accolade.

Castle Hotel breakfast chef Gerry Barge has earned the Institute of Hospitality's Hearts in Hospitality award, which was only created in June.

It recognises the efforts of unsung heroes in the industry who "delight and amaze their guests, teams, visitors, customers on an ongoing basis, and who deserve a special thank you".

Gerry was nominated by The Castle's director and general manager Ronan Hunter for "his dedication to his team and craft over the past 48 years".

Institute of Hospitality director Max Lawrence said: "Alongside creating an experience for guests, and ensuring every plate exudes the same level of care and precision, Gerry’s positive attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to embrace change have endured.

"Gerry has also shown generosity of spirit on mentoring young chefs, helping them hone their skills and passions, and being a role model for the profession.

"Gerry has been a source of inspiration not only to his colleagues but to Castle Hotel guests."

Gerry was presented with a certificate and badge in recognition of his achievements, as well as a year's membership of the Institute of Hospitality.
