WELLINGTON was well and truly illuminated for Christmas following a successful switch-on event back in December 2006.

The streets were lined with adults and children, the cast from Cinderella put in an appearance, and County Gazette staff were handing out balloons and free chocolates.

Entertainment began at 6pm with free face painting at One-Stop, free roundabouts in the street, magic shows and balloon modelling from Colin John.

Characters from Wellington Pantomime Group's production of Cinderella, including Cinders herself, Buttons, Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother all handed out badges, while Santa was in his grotto

giving out presents and giving sweets and balloons to the children.

Members of Rockwell Green Primary School Council supported the town council by pushing the big plunger to light up the town at 7pm.

The two youngest members of the school council, Jake Ware and Zara Ellins, performed the official act with the help of head girl Connie Buttle and head boy Harry Mackenzie.

Wellington Majorettes performed some dazzling routines and traditional carols were sung by members of the Wellington churches.

Shops also remained open to encourage people to start their Christmas shopping.
