AS the rain continued to pour down across Somerset on Thursday, I felt a morale boost was needed to combat the dreary weather.

That's why I headed to Wells to visit the new deli which has recently opened on the High Street.

Located opposite Coffee #1, the deli fits in to the aesthetic of Wells nicely, sporting a teal blue/green exterior, and a large window to show off what's inside.

One thing in particular which enticed me inside Fig Tree Deli was the breakfast-bar style seating with a view out of the window on to the High Street itself.

Stepping inside, I was immediately greeted with a warm, cosy feeling, as wonderful jazz music played at an ideal volume, and perfectly placed stock from local food producers adorned the shelves.Somerset County Gazette: Just some of the luxurious local produce on sale at the deli.Just some of the luxurious local produce on sale at the deli. Behind the counter was a menu on the wall showing the food that could be made for you on demand to take home or enjoy in-store.

There were also a range of cheeses, deli meats, sweet and savoury pastries, and cakes.

Other options included homemade dips such as hummus and labneh, and salads ranging from Waldorf to Tabouu, all of which were priced by weight.Somerset County Gazette: Much of Fig Tree Deli's fresh produce is made in-store.Much of Fig Tree Deli's fresh produce is made in-store. (Image: NQ Staff)

I treated myself to a chicken pesto sandwich, as well as a tahini brownie, and sat by the window to tuck into my food.

As well as being easy on the eye, the sandwich was extremely tasty, and I savoured every bite.

It was packaged in a sort of split-bag I can only assume is specially designed for sandwiches, which would be very useful if you were taking it away to eat on the go.Somerset County Gazette: My sandwich contained chicken, pesto, lettuce, avocado, and mayo.My sandwich contained chicken, pesto, lettuce, avocado, and mayo. The tahini brownie was also brilliant - although perhaps not as sweet as a traditional brownie, the tahini elevated the rich chocolatey flavour - one any dark chocolate lovers such as myself will enjoy.

Something I especially enjoyed was the envious looks of people walking past the shop window.

After finishing my food, I browsed the shelves, which were filled with produce from some of Somerset's finest food producers.Somerset County Gazette: I enjoyed looking out onto Wells High Street from the breakfast-bar style seating by the window.I enjoyed looking out onto Wells High Street from the breakfast-bar style seating by the window. The kitchen area where a lot of the food is made is open plan and looks into the store itself, which was nice as I had a lovely chat with one of the deli's co-owners, who kindly recommended me some of the items I might enjoy most.

Overall, my short time in the Fig Tree Deli was tranquil.

The friendliness and expertise of the staff combined with the beautiful venue inside and out makes this spot a great addition to Wells' already exceptional High Street.

I would recommend any peckish passers-by to step inside and sample some of the excellent treats the Fig Tree Deli has to offer.
