SOMERSET Council is urging residents across the county to take it upon themselves and their visitors to park sensibly over the Christmas period.

This is because cars forced into tight spaces frequently block the road for larger vehicles such as trucks and lorries.

This often slows down Somerset waste collection crews, and in worst cases, stops them from collecting on the road altogether.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council Waste Services said: "We are approaching Christmas and with more cars at home over the festive break, it's important to make sure we all park considerately.

"Our crews do their best to get to everyone - but cars parked in tight spaces can slow down or prevent collections.

"Please be considerate when you park and remember - if we can't get our trucks through, then a fire engine can't either."
