NEWS of a Taunton petrol station applying for a licence to sell alcohol 24 hours a day has received a mixed reaction from residents.

Euro Garages submitted the application on behalf of the location on Priory Bridge Road.

The store will open in March as an Asda Express store.

Various comments from locals and County Gazette readers range from positive to negative.

On Facebook, one local joked: "Alcohol-fuelled vehicles are better than fossil-fuels!"

Another commented: "Well if they had kept the Asda supermarket open 24 hours as it used to be then it wouldn’t be needed!"

But it's safe to say that some locals do have concerns with the proposal.

One person said: "Garages shouldn't sell alcohol", while another added "absolute ridiculous idea!".

In contrast, others are more accepting.

As one resident put it: "People complaining forget people work late shifts and like to buy a four pack and then go home".

Another said: "I work nights so it's good for me".

Nevertheless, there are concerns that the proposed store could cause issues like noise in the residential area.

In response, the company has proposed a compromise - selling alcohol from 6am until midnight, instead of 24 hours.

This offer, however, only stands if those opposing the plan withdraw their objections.

Otherwise, the company will insist on 24-hour alcohol sales.

Concerning the Asda conversion, a spokesperson previously told the County Gazette that the move marked an "incredibly exciting moment for their business", and would boost their presence in the fast-growing convenience market.

The store would stock hundreds of branded and own-label products including essentials like milk and bread, and provide customers with lunch options or dinner ingredients.

Indeed, one local wrote: "They also must serve other needs other than just alcohol", hinting at the overall contribution this store could make to the area.
