THE body of a man in his sixties was found in floodwater on the Somerset Levels on Saturday, January 6.

Witnesses near Langport reported seeing the body from a boat, prompting reports to Avon and Somerset Police at around 10:10am on Saturday morning.

Police and fire crews attended the scene to recover the deceased, confirmed as a man in his sixties from Langport.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "His family have been contacted and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained pending the outcome of forensic tests following a post-mortem examination.

"Officers are making enquiries on behalf of the coroner and anyone with information which could help to establish what happened is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5224004680."

The Environment Agency had 244 flood warnings, where flooding is expected, in place across England on Saturday – including across Somerset and the Levels.

The roads in and around the area remain flooded up until now as the water has yet to subside.
