FIREFIGHTERS were called to reports of a fire at a block of flats in Taunton town centre this morning (Saturday, January 13).

Crews tackled a small fire in one of the flats at Riverain Lodge on Tangier Way at around 9am after receiving a call from an automatic alarm company.

Fire damage was contained to the cooker but the entire flat was damaged by smoke, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

A spokesperson for the service said: “Fire control received a call from an automatic alarm company regarding a smoke alarm activation at Tangier Way.

“Two fire engines from Taunton attended the incident alongside an officer.

“On arrival, crews confirmed a small fire in one of the flats, crews immediately got to work with two breathing apparatus, one hose, and a smoke curtain to extinguish the fire.

“Crews are now using a positive pressure fan to clear the smoke from the corridors, the fire damage was contained to the cooker, and smoke damage throughout the entire flat.

“This is believed to be an accidental ignition.”
