COASTAL areas of Somerset and North Somerset are being warned of exceptionally strong winds later today (Sunday, January 21) into tomorrow (Monday, January 22).

A Met Office amber wind warning is in place for virtually all of the West Somerset and North Somerset coast from 6pm today through to 9am tomorrow.

Towns and villages in the Minehead, Burnham-on-Sea, Weston and Portishead areas can expect a spell of "very strong winds" that is likely to result in "disruption to travel and utilities".

A Met Office spokesperson said: "The amber warning for high winds means that there is a strong likelihood of disruption on the road network and as such, motorists are advised to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.

“If you do require to make a journey, then consider delaying until the weather conditions improve."

The worst case scenario according to the Met Office is "injuries and danger to life" from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties".

The rest of Somerset and North Somerset will be under a less severe yellow wind warning over the same period.

The alerts mean:

  • There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage;
  • Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs;
  • Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected;
  • Some roads and bridges likely to close;
  • Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
