SOMERSET County Cricket Club is in mourning following the death of former vice-chairman David Gabbitass.

Mr Gabbitass, who passed away on Friday (January 19) at the age of 88.

A solicitor, he was a senior partner at Wolferstans law firm in Plymouth for almost 30 years.

He joined the county club's Devon and Cornwall Area Committee and then joined the club’s main committee in 1990, where he served as well as being a member of the management committee until 2017.

Mr Gabbitass served as vice-chairman of the club from 2005 until 2017 and was considered a valuable member of the committee for his general common sense approach and specialist advice on legal matters.

In recognition of his service to Somerset, he was made an honorary life member in 2010.

Mr Gabbitass was also a well-respected member of the ECB Disciplinary Committee for many years.

Away from cricket his other interests included rugby union and he was a past president of Plymouth Albion RFC.
