A MAN from Somerset is encouraging people to get outdoors this February with the target of collectively travelling one million metres.

Guy Locke, from Cheddar, founded the A Million Metres (AMM) community movement project in February 2022, advocating for exercise, awareness for mental health organisations, and providing community initiatives.

The third instalment of the annual February Challenge encourages people to contribute metres of movement through walking, running, swimming, cycling, or dancing, with the goal of hitting one million metres.

The suggested target is 100km (100,000m) per person, and metres can be logged via a personal user login area on the AMM website.

The challenge was announced after founder Guy Locke completed his ‘Run for Mum’ in October 2023, in memory of his mum who sadly took her own life in November 2013.

He raised over £20,000 for Papyrus, a youth suicide prevention charity, and ran the equivalent of 24 marathons in 28 days - covering the entire length of the Southwest Coast path in the process.

Speaking on this year's February Challenge, Guy said: “So far, we’ve moved 10,839,596m in two years of operation - I’m aiming for 1,000,000m (one million) in a single month."
