THE first ever Mayor of Wellington is set to miss out on planned town council anniversary celebrations due to illness.

Peter Critchard will be unable to join the town council's 50th anniversary celebrations at the Civic Service on Sunday, April 14.

A spokesperson for Wellington Town Council said: "We are very sorry that the first Mayor of Wellington, Peter Critchard, is unable to join us at this Sunday's Civic Service in commemoration of our 50th anniversary.

"We look forward to welcoming our guests on Sunday for a service that we have planned in partnership with the Revered Colin Simpson.

"Within the congregation will the new High Sheriff of Somerset Robert Beckley, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset Clinton Rogers, The Rifles County Colonel for Somerset Richard Toomey, Mayors from our neighbouring towns, important members of our community, and town councillors and council staff past and present.

"This service will be open to the public."
