A POPULAR monthly market in a Somerset town has been permanently ceased but an agreement has been reached to run a new one later this year.

The Wellington Monthly Market has been cancelled for good as the person running the event had to move for family reasons.

Prospective operators stepped in and an agreement was reached, with the help of the town council, to support the provision of a market for the town.

A spokesperson for Wellington Town Council said: “The market has been ceased as the person who ran it is moving to Australia for family reasons.

“When the town council heard that the market was at risk of being lost, councillors Mark Lithgow and Keith Wheatley were appointed by the Council’s Town Centre Committee to meet with prospective operators to provide a market for the town.

“Together with our assets and events officer, they are pleased to have come to an agreement with Maxine from the Nook and Cranny shop and look forward to working with her to provide continued support for the provision of a market for the town, beginning in September this year.

“Maxine intends for there to be four markets per year but is only running one in September as the town council has already begun organisation for events on June 1 and November 30.

“Other potential operators were approached but Maxine's team offered the best combination of local knowledge and fresh ideas for the market.”
