FIVE primary schools in Somerset have been named in The Times' top 500 primary schools in England list.

The Sunday Times Parent Power league table highlights the best primary schools in England.

Schools located in London and the southwest dominate the top spots out of 500 listed in the ranking.

The publication's article reads: "The Sunday Times Parent Power league table of the best primary schools in England shows that schools in London and the southwest are continuing to dominate the top rungs.

"Four of the best ten schools — all of which have been ranked on the percentage of pupils who achieved their expected grade in the 2023 SATs tests — are in the capital, and the first in the northeast to feature is St Charles’ RC Primary School in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, ranked at 31.

"The 500 primary schools listed in our rankings make up almost 3 per cent of the 16,783 primaries in England, and the latest data shows that across the country combined reading, writing and maths levels are still lower than they were before Covid.

"In the most recent tests last May, 59 per cent of pupils reached the expected level in English, grammar and maths combined, compared with 65 per cent in 2019."
