A dozen decorated boats formed a flotilla marking the 30th anniversary of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal reopening this weekend.

The "memorable" event, organised by the Somerset Navigators Boat Club, saw at least 12 boats travel along the canal from Bathpool to Maunsel Lock and moor at the Somerset Boat Centre.

A party was then held at the centre to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. A prize for Best Dressed Boat was given, and a performance from Somerset flautist Camilla kept crowds entertained.

Food on offer at the Somerset Boat Centre included catering from Cullens smokehouse BBQ and Fiamma wood-fired pizza.

Somerset Boat Centre posted to Facebook: "What a FANTASTIC afternoon! A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated the 30th anniversary of our beautiful canal. So many smiles, great memories made, and all in aid of a great cause."

It added: "Absolutely wonderful to see so many people enjoying being out on and by the water this weekend."

The 14-and-a-half-mile waterway first opened in 1827 and was once an important trade route connecting the towns of Bridgwater and Taunton. It closed in 1907 and reopened after restoration in 1994. The canal is maintained by the Canal and Rivers Trust.
