A LISTED building formerly home to a branch of Subway in Somerset could become the new site of a  jewellery shop.

78 High Street, in Wells, was initially set to become a new kebab shop after the closure of Subway, however new plans for the vacant premises hope to turn it into a family-run business called Mendip Jewellers Wells.

A planning application submitted to Somerset Council seeks permission to install a new shopfront and entrance door, as well as signage to the side elevation, and an internal ground floor partition.

In a heritage statement submitted alongside the plans, property surveyors on behalf of the applicant wrote: "The new owner wishes to run a family jewellery store and for this to be possible, the security on the front of the building must be improved considerably.

They added: "This can be done without too much interference with the existing heritage."

"No changes to the appearance are proposed.

"The owners will take great care to preserve the existing shopfront and façade."
