A ‘UNITY rally’ took place in Taunton town centre this afternoon (Saturday, August 10) “to take a stand” after the “far-right extremism sweeping the country”.
A group of around 50 people gathered outside the Market House to say that “hate has no home in Taunton”.
People held pro-refugees banners and signs reading “say no to fascism”.
They also started “everyone is welcome” and "fascists have got to go” chants.
Vienna, the organiser of the protest, said: “This is to reply to the far-right extremism sweeping the country.
“We wanted to get the community out, there is a lot of worry.
“It was very important for people to get together, to go out and take a stand to say there’s a presence.
“For us is important to take a stand and mobilise people.
“It is very important to show solidarity with groups mobilising around the country.
“Hate has no home in Taunton.”
Rochelle Russell, who joined the rally from Wellington, said: “Many years ago, many decades ago, I was confronting the National Front. We can’t let them win, and this is why I’m here.
“I am really pleased to see this many people showing solidarity with such a short notice.
“Somerset is a great place to live. We should be proud and support communities in all their diversities.”
People joining the rally were also encouraged to write a message on some signs and banners.
A man who took part and spoke to the crowd said: “We are here today touching other people’s lives and helping people remember the world only goes round when we join hands and move together.”
