A family camping holiday in Norfolk provided the perfect chance to test the practicality of the new generation of the MG HS.
The updated model is available with both petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options and offers a blend of value, practicality, and contemporary design.
The current version of this smart-looking SUV is priced from £25,995 for the petrol SE model, with the flagship Trophy PHEV, tested here, starting at £34,495.

The previous HS proved popular, but MG has raised the bar with the latest version in terms of ride quality, interior comfort and exterior looks.
During the lengthy road trip to East Anglia, my family remarked on the comfort offered by the vehicle. As the driver, I appreciated the slick tech that allowed the HS to pace the vehicle ahead during stop-start traffic, making the journey more relaxing. Fuel economy was also very satisfying.
During our week on the campsite, a number of people came over for a chat to say they liked the look of the vehicle and to ask if it was good value for money. Pointing to the enhanced equipment and functionality, my answer was overwhelmingly positive.

The refreshed MG HS offers a choice between a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a PHEV system.
The plug-in hybrid pairs a 105kW (142ps) 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 154kW electric motor, delivering 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds, which feels swift for a vehicle that’s generally geared up to family-friendly relaxed motoring.
For those who want a more conventional powertrain, the petrol-only variant produces 169ps and 275Nm of torque, achieving 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a seven-speed DCT automatic also available.
The new model features a longer wheelbase, increasing interior space.
It is 14mm wider and 26mm longer than the previous version, with a 30mm longer wheelbase.
Styling updates include a redesigned front grille, slimmer headlights, and a new rear light signature.
Inside, the cabin features two 12.3-inch high-definition displays, improved materials, and a three-spoke steering wheel.
The infotainment system includes live navigation, weather updates, Amazon Music, and smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Trophy models add a 360-degree camera and wireless smartphone charging.
The virtual driver display offers customisable themes and modes, including navigation, simplified driving data, and real-time ADAS visualisation.

Boot capacity is now 507 litres, 44 litres more than the previous model. This came in very handy when packing a large tent, several bags and other equipment into the boot for the journey to the rather lovely Weybourne, near Sheringham.
The wider body and improved storage options add to overall practicality.
The HS Trophy model includes 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, front fog lights, power tailgate, eight-speaker audio system, iSmart with live services, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality on PHEV variants.
MG Pilot, an impressive safety feature, offers active emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, driver attention alert, forward collision warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
DCT models also include adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, and intelligent speed limit assist.

The SE trim comes with full LED headlights, rear parking sensors and camera, heated door mirrors, a six-way electric driver’s seat, air conditioning, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and cruise control.
Five exterior colours are available at launch: White Pearl, Black Pearl, Sterling Silver Metallic, Hampstead Grey Metallic, and Dynamic Red Tri-coat.
Every MG vehicle is backed by a seven-year/80,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty.
