A group from Taunton's German twin town recently visited for a week of cultural exchange.

Thirty people from Königslutter came to Taunton from Sunday, September 7, to Saturday, September 13, marking another year in a partnership that started in 1992.

These annual visits, which alternate between the UK and Germany, aim to foster friendship and mutual understanding.

The visit was organised by the Friends of Königslutter, a voluntary group that put together a week-long programme of activities.

The visitors explored Taunton, Dunster, the Museum of Somerset, and Sidmouth.

They were also treated to a civic reception by the mayor, where they experienced a traditional West Country cream tea, and sampled other British fare such as fish and chips and a ploughman's lunch.

The Mayor of Taunton, Cllr Martin Straus, along with former mayors Vanessa Garside and Nick O'Donnell, and members of Taunton's Chamber of Commerce, participated in the visit.

The Mayor of Königslutter, Alexander Hoppe, and other municipal officials also joined in for the first three days.

Almost half of the visitors were exploring Taunton for the first time.

Despite some unfavourable weather, including a thunderstorm that extended their stay at the Somerset Cricket Museum, the group reportedly enjoyed their stay.

The visit allowed for the reaffirmation of old friendships and the creation of new ones.

These trips, which take months to plan, are considered vital for maintaining the bond between the two towns.

The Friends of Königslutter group expressed gratitude for the support they receive from Taunton's mayor and council.

They noted that, in some places, town twinning has lost popularity, but they believe it is more important than ever in these times of division and conflict.

The group is now inviting new members to join them.

They meet for coffee on the first Thursday of every month, at Mr Miles during the summer and the Motor Museum café for the rest of the year.

People can follow their Facebook page for updates on activities, including fundraising events.
